Hello people!!!

Today, I am going to tell you about my favorite career related website. It is The Harvard Gazette from the University of Harvard.  http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2011/10/breakthrough/

 I like it because I have first hand access to very interesting lectures on the field of Education and Neurolinguistics, there are also articles, book reviews, photography and  art performances, interviews with prominent musicians or innovative movie directors, and above all,  the latest information on what´s happening at the University and in the academic world in different scenarios. 

I visit it whenever I have time or want to relax, or get inspired or even when I want to listen to different English accents. Try it. You won´t regret it!

“When Harry Met Sally”

It´s a comedy and a drama. It was directed by Rob Reiner, in 1989.  It is starred by Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. The movie is about Harry and Sally who are friends and have known each other for a long time. They debate if men and women can be non-sexual friends. Harry is a carefree man even though a little pessimistic as he chooses to read the end of book first “Casablanca” in case he dies. And Sally is a structured and controlling person who becomes somehow neurotic as she grows older and she is the only one of her friends who at the age of 38 has not gotten married. Finally, they realize they have been made for each other.  The movie takes place in Manhattan, New York, the landscapes and photography are beautiful and the different situations they go through are very funny. I like this movie because the acting is great and it talks about how men and women are different and about people´s fears, needs and wishes in life.

In this picture Piñera is being attacked by a walrus, at a boat fair, in Valdivia. This happened when he was looking for supporters during his presidential campaign at the fish market before the elections. Apparently, Piñera was too close to the fence which walruses usually approach for food. Piñera who was scared to death, said the sea creature had almost kissed him, even though, to me, the walrus was more likely to have him for lunch. I really don´t know who this picture was taken by, but it appeared in “Las Últimas Noticias” newspaper, in 2005. I like it because I think it is a photographic success and the horror, dread and disgust in his face are absolutely unique.   Could this animal have been hired by “La Concertación” members?

MY FAVORITE DISH.

My Favorite dish is Razor Clams with Parmesan Cheese.

For this delicious dish you need 1kg. of fresh razor clams, a little of white wine, grated parmesan cheese, lemon juice, garlic and butter, at taste. And if you want to know, they are easy to prepare: you just have to open them with a sturdy knife, clean the tongue, was away any sand or any black substance at the base, put them back on the half shell, add butter, the grated parmesan and a little of garlic, white wine and lemon juice, at taste. Bake them in a hot oven for a few minutes, and enjoy. When razor clams are cooked, they turn pink and that why they are also called "Pink Clams"

This dish is one of the classics of Chilean cuisine, and it was created 50 years ago in Viña del Mar by an Italian immigrant called Edoardo Melotti Ferrari.http://eatingchile.blogspot.com/2009/06/machas-la-parmesana.html. Even though, there is no reference of razor clams before the 1950s in Chile, archeologists refer to "the Machas Phase" 10.600 to 8.000 years before present based on findings in coastal middens (conchales) of southern coastal Peru, at that time.

I like them because they remind me of my childhood, when it was possible to find them on the beach, in Tongoy, and harvesting them together with my family was great fun. I eat them in the summer, with a cup of good white wine and toasted bread, for Easter or May 21st, with family and friends.

POST 3: MY FAVOURITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY

Hi there!!

My favorite piece of technology is my Aspire One Netbook. I bought it 2 years ago to work on my Thesis for my MA and since then, I have become very addicted to it. I am not a techie person but now I love the freedom that Wi-Fi can give you around the house. That´s why I use it all the time for many hours each day to look up information, prepare my classes, and watch or read the news. I also like it because it is light and handy and I can take it to the university or to my friends´ houses. My life would be boring without it, something like going back to the past, even though, the way we used to gather information in the past was and is still  charming to me.

Hi, it is very difficult for me to choose my favorite band because I like many, but I´m going to tell you about QUEEN. This is a British rock band formed in London in 1971. It originally consisted of the legendary Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor.   The band´s earliest work was influenced by progressive rock, but afterwards their songs became more radio-friendly and incorporated innovative styles. 20 years after the death of Freddie Mercury, Queen has been crowned as the most popular UK band of all time. Among my favorite works are "Bohemian Rhapsody" because it is a master piece to me and "Love of my life" because it is beautiful, passionate and nostalgic.

My Autobiography

Hi, how are you?

My name is Paula Vergara and I was born in Santiago. Even though, I don´t like the lifestyle in Santiago, it would be difficult for me to get used to another city. When I was little, I lived in the US, in a small town called Larchmont. It is a beautiful and peaceful place where I met wonderful people and went to school until I was 8. Then I came back to Chile to study my elementary education at Andrée English School and in 7th grade onwards, at Saint George´s College. After that, as I have always liked speaking and learning English, I studied and worked as a Translator and Interpreter for many years until I decided it was a too lonely activty.  I had a lot of experience teaching English, too, so I did a Master´s in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, at UMCE. In the future, I would like to continue studying, maybe a PhD in New Zealand.  I have a son, and I adore him. I also love listening to music, mainly the 80´s, enjoy swimming, travelling, and being with friennds.
Well my dearest, I hope you enjoy the course, my aim is to make it fun and that you improve the already great English you have.
